Birds of Prey Foundation will host an intensive two day seminar and hands-on workshop focusing on bird rehabilitation March 28-29, 2009 . Key Note Speaker Kay McKeever of the Owl Foundation. All beginning and experienced rehabilitators, volunteers and anyone interested in the field of bird rehabilitation are welcome to attend this 2 day seminar and workshop.
Sigrid Noll Ueblacker, Birds of Prey Foundation’s Founder and Executive Director, arranged this Seminar and workshops. Like many rehabilitators, Sigrid started caring for birds in her backyard over 28 years ago.
DAY 1: Saturday, March 28 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
A Spice of Life Event Center, 5706 Arapahoe Road, Boulder
DAY 2: Sunday, March 29 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Goodhue Farmhouse at Rock Creek Farm & BOP ICU, Broomfield
Registration fee:
$60 for both days
$45 for day 1 or day 2
$45 for licensed rehabilitators for both days
Breakfast: a light breakfast of bagels, muffins, fruit, coffee/tea will be provided each
morning free of charge.
Lunch: Sandwiches, Salad, Chips, Dessert, Drinks $8.00/day
(Vegetarian options will be provided.)

PRESENTATIONS – Saturday, March 28 – DAY 1
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Katherine McKeever
World renowned owl expert and founder of the Owl Foundation in Ontario, Canada, Dr. Kay McKeever will be our much honored and admired keynote speaker. Kay and her late husband, Larry, began working with injured owls in 1965. Kay is a delightful speaker and is as witty as ever. She knows more about owl behavior than you’ll ever find in books. It will be an amazing learning experience.
The Burrowing Owl Rain Dance: Linda Mahoney
Linda Mahoney is an artist/naturalist that volunteers for the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Department as a raptor monitor.
Diurnal Raptor Identification: Brian Wheeler
Brian Wheeler is the author of numerous raptor ID books. He will talk to us about diurnal raptor identification. He will also bring copies of his books and sign them upon request. After the ID class, attendees may view the Birds of Prey Foundation’s flight cages, filled with many of the species Brian has talked about.

Leucistic Golden Eagle: Diana Miller
An update on the leucistic Golden Eagle at the Nature and Raptor Center in Pueblo.
Lead poisoning: Treatment of Golden vs. Bald Eagles: Diana Miller
Diana will talk about the differences in treatment between these two species of Eagles.
Building a Backyard Rehabilitation Facility: Sigrid Noll Ueblacker
Learn how you can build a successful and functional backyard facility.
Release Criteria — Q&A session: Sigrid Noll Ueblacker
What criteria should be used to evaluate birds for release? We’ll discuss the
importance of taking the natural history of the bird into consideration.
West Nile Virus 2003: Sigrid Noll Ueblacker
2003 was a deadly year for raptors due to West Nile Virus—Sigrid will recap her experiences of that sad year.
Raptor Nesting Ecology: Will Keeley
Will, a wildlife ecologist, will speak on Raptor Nesting Ecology in Boulder County Parks and Open Space.

Diagnosis of incoming injured birds
How to use a microscope
Taxidermy and anatomy demonstration: Dr. Gregory Gusson. Dr. Gusson is a professional ornithologist and taxidermist.
